Dr. Rogers stood by the window of his clinic, looking down at the park on the other side of the street. As he watched a little boy run squealing after his puppy, he let his mind wander, thinking about the many years he had spent practicing medicine. He had attended to a lot of patients, perhaps thousands. But Lisa was special. He still remembered the day he first met her. He had stood nervously by the door of his brand new clinic, wiping away an imaginary fleck of dust from the plaque that hung on it
The young doctor turned around to see a little girl, not older than five, being led into the clinic by a very harried looking woman, who he assumed was her mother.
“She’s been coughing since yesterday”, the woman began, her brows creasing. “And this morning she got really breathless. I just wanted to make sure it was nothing serious.”
Dr. Rogers went down on his knee and smiled at the little girl, now at eye level. “Don’t worry, we’ll get you sorted in a jiffy. You look like you’ve been very brave.”
She smiled toothily back at him and held up her book, an atlas, open to a map of the world. “I’m not scared. I have the whole world with me”.
He watched gravely as Lisa’s mother ran her eyes across the lung function test. “Asthma?”
“I’m afraid so. She’ll need to come in for constant monitoring”
The doctor glanced at the little girl, wondering if she was aware of how her life was going to change. She didn’t seem too concerned though. She was too busy tracing her fingers through a map of Africa.
And so began the saga of Lisa and her weekly visits to the doctor. Unlike the other children who would come into the clinic trembling of crying, she always had a smile for the doctor. In fact, he began looking forward to her visits.
As he listened to her breathing and taught her how to use an inhaler, Dr. Rogers learnt quite a lot about this bright-eyed girl who wanted to be a photojournalist.
Nodding along to her stories, he suppressed the little niggle at the back of his mind. Would he have to tell her she couldn’t go for the internship she’d applied for? It broke his heart as he pictured her face when he would have to gently remind her about her condition, and how hard it would be to travel between all the appointments.

With these gloomy thoughts running through his mind, the doctor sat scrolling through his email one evening, when the subject line of one caught his eye.
“Custom healthcare software development by Mindfire Solutions”, he murmured to himself as he clicked open the mail. Reading the contents, he broke into a smile.
A telemedicine app that could facilitate face-to-face discussions between doctor and patients, while helping the patient monitor chronic diseases? This is just what the doctor ordered. It even offered information and advice to patients, so they could take care of themselves in the absence of a doctor!

Dr. Rogers was jolted out of his reverie by the sound of his phone ringing. Accepting the video call with his now wrinkled fingers, he smiled at his patient on the screen.
“Dr. Rogers! How have you been? How’s the new clinic? What is it, the 3rd one this year? You must be so excited!”
“Not more excited than you, I’m sure. Where is it this week?”
Lisa smiled as she began telling him about the picture she had taken of the Northern Lights, and how she was almost certain it would end up in National Geographic magazine.
“Only, the cold seems to have triggered a bit of wheezing. I entered my symptoms into the app, just like you told me to, and here I am.”
As the Doctor brought up her file on his laptop, he glanced at the wallpaper – a lion sunning itself in the African plains. If you looked closely enough, you could spot the tiny line of credit in the corner.
